Age: 31
Current Characters: Earl Ciel Phantomhive (
Character: D
Age: Unknown. Physically, he appears to be in his twenties.
Canon: Petshop of Horrors
Canon Point: Right after Volume 10 of the first arc (i.e. when D packs up shop and leaves Leon Orcot behind).
Background: The Petshop of Horrors Wiki and Regular Wiki.
Personality: At the beginning of the series, D presents himself as separate from humanity (though he has human customers to his petshop frequently). He cherishes his animals far more than humans and he openly admits that he despises many human traits (especially their pride and their blindness to how they treat others/the world around them). However after encountering Leon and especially his little brother Chris, D begins to soften and open his eyes to the more positive human traits. He even admits, after encountering a human girl who has loved him through multiple lifetimes, that he does not understand human love - which is ironic considering he has fulfilled many human and animal dreams/desires for love.
Though his relationship with Leon is tumultuous, D really comes to cherish him and his little brother, Chris. In a way, D becomes a pseudo-parent figure for Chris too and, by doing so, he attaches himself further to humanity. His dealings with his human customers likewise change and he seems to shift from outright punishing/thinking ill of all humans to actually showing empathy and outright friendliness to those he deems deserving (i.e. generally those of honest and/or kind temperaments).
However humanity is not meant to last like D and his kind. D realizes the day will come when Chris no longer needs him, though he does not let that realization cloud the time he spends with the boy. Yet, when that day comes, one of his pets - a three-headed dragon - sheds D's tears in his stead. On that day, the realization that his time with Leon too is dwindling seems to weigh heavier on D's shoulders. By volume 10 of the manga, he has accepted the end has come.
With his father's death - and rebirth - as well as his grandfather's transformation (from Q-chan), D accepts that he must move on. Leon and Chris must live their life the way they are meant to and D will, as before, be a spectator, influencing events where he may with the animals of his shop. As such, D is in mourning. He misses his friend and his almost son; he misses Chinatown, yet that is a burden he must carry alone for he is not human.
On a lighter note, D can be quite mischievous. He can be very alluring to some and draw them in like moths to a flame (in order to gain favors from them later). He also has a knack for angering those who annoy him (in order to make them go away). D believes in true justice - right down to an eye for an eye in some cases - and oftentimes his mischief intertwines with his chosen methods of punishment for those deserving of it (i.e. like almost turning a little girl into a dog who was mistreating/abusing her dog).
D is a fan of order, sweets and tea. He keeps his petshop clean, warm and inviting - like a home - and he intensely dislikes chaos and anyone showing a lack of manners. It is truly a wonder he found a friendship with Leon Orcot at all considering how unpolished and ill-tempered the detective can be, yet D can see beneath such unfavorable traits to the heart beneath (and since Leon oftentimes acts like an animal, it's no wonder D has an easy time reading him).
And, finally, D is old-fashioned. He does not take well to technology unless given adequate reason. For example, he did not buy a computer until he was informed that he could order sweets via it far easier than waiting for the bakery to stock his favorites. (This is one of the main reasons I think he is far older than he appears. He seems to hail from a very technologically innocent time, though so little is known about his past. It is equally possible his grandfather kept him away from human contraptions while they traveled the world.)
Abilities: 伞 Ninja-like reflexes and he can scale houses and evade high-tech security systems with ease.
伞 His connection with animals is very strong. He can speak with them and determine their well-being (and what they may want or lack) quickly.
伞 His knowledge of animals and their various histories is vast.
伞 His knowledge of sweets and history in general is vast.
伞 He can call upon creatures of legend (by spilling his blood) as well as give people visions/dreams/nightmares that will alter their perception on reality. He will often do this when his life is in danger or when someone deserves a particularly cruel punishment.
伞 He can make humans forget they ever saw him through telepathic/mental suggestion.
伞 He can see infrared light with his golden eye (which he inherited from his grandfather).
伞 He can breathe underwater and/or hold his breath for an impressive amount of time. (He can even speak to the creatures beneath, so that makes it seem more like the former than the latter.)
伞 His manners are impeccable. This man could easily enter any castle/palace in the world and likely be a welcomed guest. However it is usually the creatures of legend that see how polished and polite he can be (i.e. the Kirin etc.).
伞 He keeps a neat shop/house and he can care for many animals (babies and elderly included) at a time.
伞 On an odder note, he is very good at seeing beyond the facades of others. He will often know their true intentions even before they act. Perhaps this comes from instinct - D isn't so different from his animals - but it could also be an ability that is shared by his race.
伞 Oh and his long fingernails? They are basically claws. (And if he breaks one, it takes two months to heal.)
伞 And, finally, he knows the ingredients/mixtures of incense that can cause hallucinations/dreams. He also uses a similar incense so customers can see the true forms of their animal companions.
Alignment: Elios: D has a great capacity to love and a great capacity to hate. He detests the humans who take advantage of the world and the creatures in it. However he has met some humans that he has, unexpectedly, come to care for deeply. D might try to have a fixed opinion about those he encounters - especially if they are human - but he has more of his grandfather's kindness in him than his father's desire for ultimate vengeance.
